Ezra and Ezekiel Humphrey Arrive on Different Days. They arrived in Different Years!
The Humphrey family of Merchantville, New Jersey, started the New Year with a truly serendipitous story. Eve and Billy Humphrey learned they were expecting twin boys. They hardly predicted the dramatic timing of their arrivals.
Initially due at the end of January, Eve’s water broke on New Year’s Eve—Billy’s birthday. The prospect of sharing his special day with his sons was thrilling for Billy. “What a birthday gift,” he remarked as they arrived at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, ready for a memorable day.
Ezra, Baby A, made his entrance at 11:48 p.m. on December 31, 2023. His arrival gave the Humphreys their first New Year’s Eve baby. It also offered a prompt tax deduction. Eve humorously highlighted this point.
But Baby B had his own plans. While Eve labored, the world outside the delivery room celebrated the New Year. Amid the joyful countdowns, Ezekiel was born at 12:28 a.m. on January 1, 2024.
The brothers’ distinct birthdays add a touch of rarity to their bond. Twins born on different days are uncommon enough; twins born in separate years are almost unheard of.
The twins join their three-year-old brother. Hezekiah celebrates his birthday just days later on January 3. For Billy, the arrival of Ezra and Ezekiel marks a continuation of joy in a month already brimming with celebrations.
“This is it for us,” Billy laughed, reflecting on their growing family. “We’re just excited to have three healthy boys.”
Looking ahead, Billy envisions father-son birthday adventures as a tradition, giving their mom a well-deserved break.
For Dr. Melissa Yurkanin and the delivery team, the Humphrey twins’ birth was a first. “In all my years of practice, I’ve never had twins born on separate days, let alone separate years,” she said.
As for the twins, their unique story is sure to be a lifelong source of laughter and camaraderie. Billy imagines the playful sibling banter: “If I were Ezra, I’d hold it over my brother’s head—‘I’m a year older!’”
The Humphrey family’s experience is a reminder of life’s beautiful unpredictability. Ezra and Ezekiel’s extraordinary entrances will undoubtedly be cherished—and celebrated—for years to come.
