A Creative Salute to Veterans and the Spirit of Independence
In the heart of Norwood, Massachusetts, one resident’s front lawn stands out in a grand display of patriotism. In 2018, Arthur McCann, driven by a deep respect for veterans and a love for his country, transformed his lawn into a giant American flag, spray-painted using field paint. This impressive tribute, measuring roughly 30 by 20 feet, graced his yard for several months, slowly fading away as the paint grew out.
“I just like to go big,” McCann expressed. His passion for creating bold, artistic expressions was evident in the time and effort he put into this project. Despite his busy schedule running a maintenance department, McCann dedicated about two hours to carefully craft this tribute.
The inspiration behind this enormous flag was deeply personal. McCann’s grandfather served in the Navy during World War II, and this display was a heartfelt tribute to him and all those who have served. It was a way for McCann to honor their sacrifices and express his gratitude through art.
This was not the first time McCann showcased his patriotic spirit. The flag made its appearance annually before his Fourth of July party, becoming a much-anticipated sight in the community. Locals drove by to admire the flag, which had become a symbol of pride for the neighborhood. Norwood, situated southwest of Boston, is a community rich in patriotic displays and home to many veterans.
McCann was aware that such a prominent display might be misinterpreted in today’s polarized climate. However, he emphasized that his flag was not a political statement but a positive message of patriotism. “I really do this for a positive message,” he said, hoping that everyone could appreciate the tribute in the spirit it was intended.
As Independence Day approached, McCann prepared to welcome about 75 guests into his home for a celebration. The gathering featured a feast of chicken, burgers, mac and cheese, cornbread, sausages, and more, creating a festive atmosphere where friends and family could come together to celebrate freedom and creativity.
“I just love America and the freedom and opportunities it gives, and I love to be creative,” McCann said. His lawn flag was a testament to this love, combining artistic expression with a heartfelt tribute to those who have served the nation. Through this grand display, Arthur McCann continued to inspire his community, reminding everyone of the importance of honoring our veterans and celebrating the freedoms we cherish.
