Breaking the Cycle: How Rudy Gonzales Sr. and Rudy Gonzales Jr. Transformed Their Lives Through Faith and Determination
Just a few years ago, the streets of Phoenix were home to Rudy Gonzales Sr. and his son, Rudy Gonzales Jr. Their days were marked by uncertainty, addiction, and the struggle to find a stable place to stay. At one point, the duo even shared a tent for a couple of weeks, embodying the harsh reality of homelessness.
“I always knew I wanted to change my life,” Rudy Jr. reflected, “I just didn’t know how to do it.”
From 2016 to 2018, Rudy Jr. and his dad found themselves homeless, couch surfing, and often struggling to find shelter. “We didn’t have nowhere to go,” Rudy Jr. recalled. “But we were in our addiction. We tried to get help at several different places, we would stay there, and they wouldn’t work out.”
Rudy Jr.’s turning point came about five and a half years ago. “I started getting in trouble, started drinking, and I was doing drugs,” he said. “I thought, ‘This is not where I need to go.’ I needed to change my life, and I did.”
In December 2018, Rudy Jr. entered the Phoenix Rescue Mission, a faith-based recovery program. He graduated in 2020, having found a new path grounded in faith and sobriety. “There’ve been ups and downs in my life, but I never went back to drinking and handling things the same way I did. Instead, I prayed. I always brought God into it and stayed strong,” Rudy Jr. said.
Seeing his son’s transformation, Rudy Sr. began to believe in the possibility of change for himself as well. “It’s not the same son that I used to know,” Rudy Sr. admitted. “This place (Phoenix Rescue Mission) has really done something.”
Rudy Sr.’s journey into addiction began after the death of his mother in 2007. “I tried to keep afloat with my job, but I ended up hitting rock bottom,” he said. “Then I’d bounce back and then hit rock bottom again.”
In April 2023, Rudy Sr. took a leap of faith. Encouraged by his son, he joined the Phoenix Rescue Mission. “So many times I tried to do it on my own, and I realized that I needed to listen to my son. That’s the best thing I’ve done,” Rudy Sr. acknowledged.
Now, both father and son are proud graduates of the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Their relationship, once strained by addiction and hardship, has transformed into one of mutual respect and shared faith. “I used to be very disrespectful,” Rudy Jr. said, smiling. “Now we have different views on certain scriptures, and that’s what we argue about.”
“Now we’re not talking about worldly things. We’re talking about the Word of God,” Rudy Sr. added.
Rudy Sr. is now pursuing Ministry Training, gaining practical experience in outreach, rescue, and recovery work through the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Rudy Jr., on the other hand, has moved to a larger house with his family and is thriving in his role as a provider.
Together, Rudy Sr. and Rudy Jr. have broken the cycles of addiction and homelessness that once defined their lives. They are committed to creating a better future for the next generation. “I feel blessed because my dad lost his dad from drinking,” Rudy Jr. said. “At least I’m able to give every moment now to my dad and kind of give a demonstration to my son.”
Their story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith and recovery. The Gonzales duo has not only found hope and healing for themselves but also laid a foundation of strength and faith for future generations.
