Howard University: Empowering Communities, Inspiring Futures
In the flurry of spring break season, where many college students flock to beaches or resorts for leisure and relaxation, there exists a beacon of altruism and service at Howard University, affectionately known as ‘The Mecca’. For three decades, Howard University students have embraced a tradition of giving back during their breaks through the student-led initiative called Alternative Spring Break. This program, funded solely by donations, embodies the spirit of selflessness and community engagement that Howard University holds dear.
This year marks a significant milestone as the university celebrates 30 years of the Alternative Spring Break program. With a record-breaking 2,100 student applications, 1,400 spring breakers are currently dispersed across 25 underserved communities both domestically and internationally. The theme for this year’s program is aptly titled “A Legacy of Paying it Forward.”
One such group of students found themselves in Baltimore, foregoing the typical spring break festivities for a different kind of experience. At Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School, Howard University students engaged in mentoring activities, leaving an indelible mark on both the children and themselves.
The impact of this alternative spring break extends far beyond the week-long service stint. It’s not just about the tangible assistance provided to local organizations or the clean-up efforts undertaken. It’s about the exchange of inspiration and motivation that occurs when individuals come together with a shared purpose of uplifting others.
Reflecting on her experience, one Howard University student remarked, “Not only has this benefitted students but it has benefitted me. It has given me more motivation because I know, in college and being successful, I not only help myself but I give others inspiration to keep going.”
In a society often characterized by individualism and self-interest, the Alternative Spring Break program at Howard University serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of service and community. As the program wraps up for another year, the impact of these students’ efforts will continue to reverberate, leaving a legacy of compassion and goodwill in its wake.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Howard University’s Alternative Spring Break embodies this sentiment, empowering students to discover the true meaning of service while leaving a lasting legacy of positive change.
