Turning Halloween Scares into St. Jude Support: How Skeletons Illuminate the Path of Hope
In the quiet neighborhoods of Satsuma and Saraland, Alabama, an extraordinary Halloween tradition has taken root—one that combines spooky skeletons with a heartwarming cause. Four houses have transformed their yards into chilling displays, but these decorations aren’t just for scares; they’re on a mission to raise funds for the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This enchanting fundraiser is aptly named “Skeletons for St. Jude.”
Brittany and Ronny Reeves, the passionate minds behind this initiative, are determined to make 2022 a year to remember. Their goal? A staggering $250,000, all of which will be channeled towards supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer through St. Jude’s remarkable work.
For the Reeves, this cause hits close to home. Brittany reflects on the profound impact of cancer, especially on young lives: “Cancer as an adult is hard, but for children I could only imagine so. We personally haven’t had anyone go through St. Jude’s, thankfully.” She emphasizes the need for families to focus solely on their loved ones’ well-being, without the burden of financial worries. “No one should have to worry about where you’re going to get money to help your loved one. You should just be able to focus on them, you know, and help them thrive and be able to get better.”
While the Reeves haven’t needed the services of St. Jude personally, they see this fundraiser as a way to pay their blessings forward. Their mission is clear: to alleviate some of the financial stress that families face in the midst of such a challenging journey.
In 2021, the national campaign garnered an astounding $150,000 in just 39 days. The Skeletons for St. Jude fundraiser had its roots in 2020 in Holly Springs, North Carolina, and since then, it has blossomed into a nationwide movement, thanks in no small part to the power of social media.
The Reeves’ deep affinity for Halloween drew them to this particular cause. For the past two years, they’ve been actively involved in the Skeletons for St. Jude fundraiser. Their objective is clear: to shine a spotlight on this initiative and garner donations for St. Jude’s crucial research.
This heartfelt campaign was initiated by Jeff Robertson of Holly Springs, NC, in 2020. Through the force of social media, the fundraiser quickly expanded across the nation. In 2021 alone, it garnered over $150,000 in donations for St. Jude’s, an impressive feat that included a generous $45,000 contribution from Home Depot.
As the 2022 campaign gains momentum, the goal is to exceed $250,000 in donations. As of now, the nationwide effort has already raised nearly $70,000, showcasing the tremendous potential for making a difference.
This Halloween, as the skeletons don their spooky attire, they’re not just sending chills down spines—they’re creating waves of hope and support for children fighting cancer. The Skeletons for St. Jude initiative is a testament to the incredible impact that a community can have when they come together for a cause greater than themselves.
